Why Machu Picchu Should Be on Your Bucket List
Perched at 2,430 meters above sea level in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, Machu Picchu remains one of the most breathtaking archaeological sites on Earth. Built in the 15th century under the Inca emperor Pachacuti, this ancient citadel was abandoned during the Spanish Conquest and remained hidden from the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.
Today, Machu Picchu attracts over a million visitors annually, and for good reason. The combination of stunning Andean scenery, incredible Inca engineering, and the mystical atmosphere that surrounds the ruins creates an experience that is truly unforgettable.
New Regulations for 2026
The Peruvian Ministry of Culture has implemented several important changes for 2026 that every visitor should be aware of:
- Circuit system: There are now 5 different circuits to choose from, each offering a unique perspective of the citadel. Circuit 1 and 2 are the most popular and include the classic postcard viewpoint.
- Time slots: Entry is divided into specific time slots starting from 6:00 AM, with the last entry at 2:00 PM. Each visit allows approximately 2.5 hours inside the site.
- Mandatory guide: A licensed tour guide is required for all visitors. Solo exploration is no longer permitted.
- Daily limit: A maximum of 4,500 visitors per day helps preserve the site while still allowing access to travelers.
How to Get There
There are several ways to reach Machu Picchu, each offering a different experience:
1. Train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo
The most popular option is taking the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). Two companies operate this route: PeruRail and Inca Rail. The journey from Ollantaytambo takes about 1.5 hours and passes through stunning Sacred Valley scenery.
2. The Classic Inca Trail
The 4-day Inca Trail trek is the most iconic way to arrive at Machu Picchu. Walking through the Sun Gate at dawn and seeing the citadel emerge from the morning mist is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Permits sell out months in advance, so book early!
3. Alternative Treks
If the Inca Trail is sold out or you want a different adventure, consider the Salkantay Trek (5 days) or the Lares Trek (4 days). Both offer incredible mountain scenery and cultural encounters with local communities.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to October offers the best weather conditions with clear skies and minimal rainfall. June to August is peak season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.
The shoulder months of April and November can be excellent choices — fewer tourists, reasonable weather, and better availability for permits and hotels.
Pro tip: If you visit during the rainy season (November to March), you'll find fewer crowds and lush green landscapes. Just pack a good rain jacket!
What to Pack
Packing smart is essential for a comfortable visit to Machu Picchu:
- Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip — the stone paths can be slippery
- Rain jacket or poncho — weather can change quickly in the mountains
- Sunscreen and hat — the UV index at altitude is intense
- Water bottle — stay hydrated, especially at altitude
- Insect repellent — mosquitoes can be present, especially in warmer months
- Layers — mornings can be cool but midday gets warm
- Valid passport — required for entry to the site
Dealing with Altitude
While Machu Picchu itself sits at 2,430m (lower than Cusco at 3,400m), altitude sickness can still affect some visitors. Here are our recommendations:
- Spend at least 2-3 days acclimatizing in Cusco before your visit
- Drink plenty of coca tea (mate de coca), a traditional Andean remedy
- Stay well hydrated and avoid heavy meals
- Walk slowly and take breaks as needed
- Consider consulting your doctor about altitude medication before your trip
